Like the cast of an ensemble film, the players at Newport Beach- and Los Angeles-based interiors firm Bonesteel Trout Hall know precisely what expertise their teammates bring to each project they work on. Michele Trout says she can rely on Heidi Bonesteel for her fantastic color sense and “that one unexpected thing that makes the whole room sing.” While Bonesteel says Trout keeps the work “pure and strong,” and has the uncanny ability to visualize the end project at every step. And then there’s Jill Hall—the behind-the-scenes, buttoned-up business manager who enables her creative partners to run free. The resulting work, says Bonesteel, “is layered, textured and casual—with a twist.” For a project in Pacific Palisades, for example, she designed a colorful upholstered headboard that wraps entirely around the nightstands. “It’s beautiful and still traditional,” says Trout, “but it is so unexpected.”
