Insight: Tony Ciavola

For Tony Ciavola, bespoke embroidery designer and founder of Mia Tavola, honoring tradition is as important as the modernizations that make his work unique. “Our products are a fresh interpretation of classic designs,” he says. Italian for my table, Mia Tavola is the merging of two lines: a bespoke option that includes custom pillows, tabletop items, draperies, bed and bath linens, and furniture trims, and a ready-made retail collection. Inspired by European needlework, ornamental patterns, architectural elements and historical tilework, Ciavola, who learned to embroider on a borrowed machine, employs a distinctive approach to his decorative motifs. Boiling down his work to its most elemental form, he then brings it back to a place of quiet expression. “This gives our designs individuality that functions in most environments,” he says. With over 100 colors of imported linens, Ciavola aims to complete his clients’ interiors with the perfect finishing touches. “Designers are creating rooms that will stay the same for 20 years,” he explains. “Our linens complement that.”

LX: I got started...
TC: In 2004 when I opened a small studio in the Ravenswood Industrial Corridor and began producing custom table linens for interior designers. At first it was purely a bespoke undertaking, but within my first year I developed and began producing my own designs, too.

LX: Current project...
TC: We recently finished production on a collection of bespoke cocktail napkins for designer Kelly Wearstler. They’re an abstract design she created: very hip yet understated at the same time.

LX:  Greatest influence...
TC: My grandmother had a creative energy that I gravitated to from an early age. She taught me how to garden, cook, set a table and decorate.

LX: Dream collaborations...
Designer Bunny Williams. I have no doubt I’d get the education of a lifetime. I’d also love to be part of the interiors team on a Robert A.M. Stern house. They’re both legends in the industry who, though also grounded in traditional approaches, always bring a fresh perspective to their projects.;
