Insight: Jamie Schachtel and Danielle Yucht

More than an acronym that stands for Chair, Ottoman, Upholstered, End Table, and Furniture, COUEF is not only a brand but the name its loyal customers affectionately use to describe this versatile line of fine furnishings. Conceived by mother-daughter designers Jamie Schachtel and Danielle Yucht, of Jamie Schachtel Design Group in Highland Park, COUEF delivers high quality with a multipurpose—from an ottoman that triples as a chair, end table or footstool, to swivel chairs with pullout shelves and benches with built-in storage. Lightweight yet durable, the functional furniture line was born of necessity. “We were designing COUEFs for our clients to fit different spaces and styles,” Schachtel says. “They loved them so much that we started our own line.” Made of solid maple and handcrafted in the United States, the 30-piece collection is sold by appointment to the trade, and with 20 fabrics and nine finishes, the customizing options are endless. And so are the COUEFs. “We’re thinking of introducing an outdoor line,” Yucht says, making COUEF an even more adaptable brand than it already is.

LX: I got started...
JS: Owning a children’s furniture store. Clients would ask me to fashion the rest of their home after we finished the baby’s room, which led to my design firm. We then went on to produce some of our custom pieces, and launched COUEF shortly thereafter.

LX: Current Project...
DY: We’re wrapping up a chic single-family home in Fort Sheridan, a suburb of Chicago in the North Shore. Our client desired a warm industrial feel.

LX: Preferred local design shop...
JS: Kenneth Ludwig Home Furnishings in The Merchandise Mart, where our COUEF line is also sold.

LX: Favorite Hotel...
DY: I love the Four Seasons Hotel Chicago. It’s an oasis in the sky.

LX: Dream collaboration...
JS: Holly Hunt. Exhibiting the COUEF collection in her showrooms would be such a great success for us.
