tips & tidbits: fern santini.

With a Kallista tub like the one in this Austin bathroom, it’s hard to imagine ever wanting to step out from a warm, bubble-filled soak. Interior designer Fern Santini rebelled against the whole “everything is bigger in Texas” credo to make sure the focus stayed where it belonged in the space: on comfort and relaxation. Borrowing inspiration from Spanish Colonial residences of the 1920s and '30s, Santini paired some of the more rustic elements of the genre—like the reclaimed long-leaf yellow pine on the floor and window casings—with more refined materials, like the Carrera marble tub surround and the antique mirrored wainscoting throughout. “It has a historical context that ties in well with the rest of the house,” she says, “but it also feels fresh and glamorous.”

I like the way the tub snuggles into that corner. You can imagine yourself feeling cozy and warm in that tub, despite the cavernous room.
