You’d want to have your party shoes on hand if you were ever invited to attend one of Los Angeles-based Nathan Turner’s esteemed fetes. As for the celebrated designer, event planner, travel enthusiast and antiques purveyor, he prefers to go barefoot; and it’s this casual approach to décor and entertaining that has made him and his Almont Drive shop, Nathan Turner Interiors & Antiques household names.

When did you discover your passion for design? I was always really particular about my room and my surroundings. As a child, I traveled a lot around Europe with my family and I was amazed by all the different architecture and design. My grandma was British, and so I spent a lot of time there and came to love the traditional English look. It’s shaped a great deal of my personal aesthetic.

What’s your favorite part of the job? I love the thrill of the treasure hunt and of not knowing what I’m going to find. I could go somewhere desperately looking for a chest of drawers and instead find 18 great chairs. I love going to Istanbul for textiles, and I’m fascinated by Mexico City; they’re big cities that are so layered historically, and each of the different cultures that have passed through them have left their footprints behind.

Describe your approach to design. Really laid back. I barely ever wear shoes, and that’s a good reflection of the way I work. I’m much more into a relaxed environment than precious one. A space has to be comfortable and livable with interest and style to it.

What’s your fantasy career? I would love to be a country western singer. I love country music: George Strait, Dolly Parton, Willy Nelson, Brad Paisley and Tim McGraw. If I could even remotely sing, I think I’d give it a try.

Is there one thing you can’t live without? My dogs, Nacho and Daisy. I have an almost unhealthy relationship with them. I’m very codependent.

Tell us about your current obsession. They come and go so quickly! I’m impetuous in that way, but I’ve always remained true to color. Beige and gray are great, but a room has to have bright, “poppy” colors to bring it to life.

How do you get inspired? By traveling. Getting myself out in the world and exposing myself to different things has given me so much. I can go on a trip and pick up a detail off of a door, or a really fantastic color, and I’ll end up using it at some point.

What’s your biggest indulgence? Food! It’s one of my biggest pleasures in life. I love to cook.

Name your favorite room in your house. It would definitely be my bedroom. It’s calm (unlike me!), and I really need that.
